Tessuti Challenge

Ok so I'm sitting here having coffee going over ideas for an outfit. We decided last week that we were going to enter the Tessuti GRIDLOCK challenge.

At the moment Tessuti have a competition going where we can design and make an outfit out of their new "gridlock" fabric. So far I've done a bunch of designs that we just weren't 100% on but after a lengthy discussion with J I think we have decided what were doing...it's a super cute idea and we'll share it very soon ;P...as soon as iv drawn it up

Here's two photos of the fabric, it looks to have brilliant texture to it which will be great to work with, also I love the shade of blue that has been used...the fabric screams winter to us

1940's Sewing Challenge | Construction

I'll start of saying Sorry for the poor quality of photos.

So the pattern pieces were made, checked, double checked and triple checked.
It was then time to boldly cut the pieces out of the mustard fabric we decided on.

I stitched my little heart out and here is what we have so far...

Front on view of half the skirt part.  Loving how its sticking out, worked out very nicely.

Now this photo is of the inside of the pocket area and really don't like that the seam is very visible.
After a long think we came up with 'making a feature' out of it, by adding a very small strip of fabric between the seams.

This is a horrible close up of the fabric between the pocket seam.  You can't really tell, but its the pale floral fabric we will eventually make the belt out of.
Its not sitting right because it needs a really good press!

The top half is very close to being finished now.  (This photo is a few days old).
I didn't line the whole dress and didn't intend to from the start.  But as it started to form, I really didn't like the gathering areas being seen on the inside.  So I cut out an extra 'triangle' piece and two more front shoulder pieces.  So I'm not sure if you'd call them lining pieces or not, but in my opinion it looks a lot cleaner.

I was "umm-ing and ahh-ing", about putting this last photo up of it all pinned to the "Helper", but I'm just so excited.
Ahhhhh it's nearly an actual dress Yaaay :)

More Updates and photos very soon.
Happy Stitching!

1940's Sewing Challenge | Style and Design

So what do you do when you're a blog newbie and 2 days into starting a blog?

You throw yourself into a sew along challenge of course!  *If you're crazy, like we are*

We had a basic idea of what the 1940's era was all about, but we weren't at all confidant.  Reading some tips, useful websites and a basic Google image search, we found pictures and patterns we really loved.  We got it down to 2 dress choices and still couldn't decide on which one to recreate.

So we combined them both!!!
Simplicity 2087 from 1947.
In love with the gorgeous waist detailing and how it shapes the body.

McCall 4444 from 1944.
From the waist up, will be the top half of our dress. A V neckline and the vertical gathering effect over the bust line this is very flattering, on any shaped and sized body. Beautiful!

Combined it looks like this ...

Since we have thrown ourselves into this fabulous challenge a few days into starting a blog,
Why not make it harder again by not buying or using a full commercial pattern.
We are always up for a challenge! Not to prove anything to anybody, but to simply challenge ourselves.

With challenge comes, learning and or improving new skills, techniques and knowledge,
trial and error - if you make a mistake, rethink, fix it, start over or improve it, patience and here is the big one - The feeling of Success.

Here is the first Interfacing pattern piece I started drapping. I started with the front skirt, mainly because this piece is what gives the dress its shape, with how it sits out from the side of the body.
I then done the back skirt, and worked my way up from there. I have done all the pattern pieces now - Although I did use a top back and sleeve from a shirt pattern I already had.
I haven't drapped or created a pattern from scratch, for about 7 years. So this has been a huge (re)learning curve for me.
So far, so good.

So the next step was playing with fabric, (which is always fun).
I didn't want to buy any fabric especially for this, only because I knew I had some fabric that would be suitable in the trusty stock pile.
I found this mustard fabric that we both thought would be great. Have NO idea what type of fabric it is, but it has a really good drape to it. The pale fabric on the left, will be a feature as the belt.

All 3 fabrics in this photo belonged to my Grandmother, which makes it a little more special for me.
The mustard was a length of about 2meters.
The bright floral on the right, was one of her shirts that I unpicked, because I love the fabric.
The pale floral on the left was a pillow case, again, that I unpicked because I love it.

2013 Best Dress ... So Far

Lucy Lui wearing a floral print Carolina Herrera Pre-Fall 2013 ball gown (or as I like to say, every little girls dream dress).  I personally find this dress to be absolutely stunning! I love the fabric, I can feel the weight in this, I think the blue colour was such a great choice for Lucy's skin but more importantly its FLORAL (we love floral).

This was by far my favourite look from the Golden Globes this year, lets take a look at the other 2 I really liked.

Jennifer Lawrence wearing Dior Haute Couture dress. Not too much of a shock considering she's the newest face of the labels Miss Dior handbags. I absolutely j'dore (cheeky face) this dress, I think everything about it is just stunning, that being said she could wear garbage and still look a stunner!

Sofia Vergara wearing Michael Cinco
Can Sofia ever go wrong? with those killer curves i would say NO! This dress is superb  and really does accentuate Sofia's best assets. The detailing on this dress from what I can tell is impeccable and quite honestly who doesn't love sequins!
